Marshalls Helps Team UK Win Silver at WorldSkills London 2011
Marshalls has helped two young, budding Landscape Gardeners from the UK win silver awards at this year’s WorldSkills event, demonstrating the company’s ongoing commitment to encourage the next generation of skilled landscaping professionals.

WorldSkills London 2011, held at London’s ExCel, saw over 1,000 young people from across 50 countries come together and compete to become the best in 46 different vocational skill categories ranging from autobody repair, interior design and carpentry, to plumbing, beauty therapy and catering.

Marshalls sponsored the landscape gardening category and supplied materials from its domestic product range to the competition, which saw pairs of up-and-coming young landscapers from around the world compete to build a beautiful garden in just four days. Team UK scooped silver medals in the landscape gardening competition, using Marshalls Fairstone Setts to pave a substantial portion of the space.

Simon Abbott from Askham Bryan College and James Cuffey from the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise in Northern Ireland impressed judges at this year’s competition with their outstanding landscaping talent, helping Team UK to improve their overall score from the 2009 WorldSkills event in Canada.

Commenting on the 2011 WorldSkills event, Marshalls Group Marketing Director Chris Harrop said:
“Events such as WorldSkills offer a fantastic way for Marshalls to help inspire young people and encourage them to see the benefits that creating better landscapes can bring. The future growth of our industry is reliant on landscapers with the right skills to meet customer needs, and with the talent on display at WorldSkills I think we can say that the future does look bright.

Marshalls works hard with both industry and people in the local community to encourage the next generation of hard landscapers to join the growing number of skilled people in the workforce by taking up vocational training. For example, we have worked closely with The Manchester College to train over 300 of our Marshalls Registered Installers to gain NVQ level 2 qualifications, improving the skills base by investing in the future.”

As presenting sponsors of this year’s event, Marshalls staff were also on hand at the exhibition to offer the 200,000 visitors to ExCel London advice and guidance on how to become a landscape gardener. For those with no prior knowledge of the subject Marshalls produced a set of popular ‘how to’ videos, which are accessible here: www.youtube.co.uk/MarshallsGroup and also offered expert advice and live demonstrations of its CAD design service as part of the exhibition.
