We’re committed to minimising our impact on the environment, and key to this is our plan to reduce our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to Net Zero. To ensure that this target is meaningful and our progress against this target stands up against scrutiny, our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction pathway has been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

The SBTi is a collaborative effort involving several global organisations, including the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI), World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and Carbon Disclosure Project among others. Science-based targets are goals for reducing emissions that are informed by the latest climate science and aligned with the 2015 Paris Agreement. The SBTi scrutinises and approves a company’s emission reduction targets to ensure they are in line with the objectives of limiting global warming to a maximum of 1.5⁰C by 2050.

Decarbonisation is a commitment that we take seriously. In 2022, our near term emissions reduction target pathway was approved by the SBTi, affirming our alignment with the levels necessary to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.

We commit to reduce our absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 50.4% (equivalent to 59.4% per tonne of production) by 2030 from a 2018 base year. We also commit that 73% of our suppliers by emissions, covering purchased goods and services and upstream transport and distribution, will have science-based targets by 2024.*

As part of the Group’s climate change strategy and commitment to science-based targets, Marshalls supports the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) in line with the UK Government’s expectation that listed companies should disclose according to TCFD recommendations.

* Our recent acquisition of Marley roofing has triggered an automatic re-calculation of these targets, as per the SBTi criteria. Our new targets have been submitted to the SBTi and we are awaiting validation
