At the start of this month, the Builders Merchant Federation held their ‘Building Beyond Boundaries’ Conference in North Yorkshire, after being rescheduled. Pleased to be one of the guest speakers, our Group Trading Director Pete Hallitt took to the stage to talk about the challenges of the last 18 months and how the skills and strengths of our people shone through.

Pete said:
“We’ve faced huge challenges as an industry, but as a business, what I’m most proud of is how our people have responded. From quickly adapting to working from home to maintaining great customer relationships using technology, it wasn’t easy, but their determination and loyalty made a huge difference.”

During his presentation, Pete shared several lessons learned during the pandemic, including the importance of communication and the need to abandon traditional rules. He also spoke about the importance of genuine sustainability;

“We’ve seen a 50% reduction in carbon since 2008, and we’re on a path to achieve net zero emissions by 2030. We’re investing in our processes and manufacturing capacity to meet the growing demand from the market whilst also reducing our environmental impact. We’ve got a lot to look forward to, and we couldn’t achieve these great things without our people.”

The long-awaited Conference sold out just eight weeks after tickets were released and over 400 suppliers and merchants attended.
