Marshalls achieve Fair Tax accreditation for 5th year

Transparency in tax paying is important to us as a company and so we’re pleased to announce that we’ve been awarded the Fair Tax Mark for the fifth consecutive year.

More than that, it’s a promise that a company can be trusted to look after its customers’ best interests – as well as those of society as a whole. Almost two thirds (63%) of people believe that the Government and local councils should consider a company’s ethics and how they pay their tax as well as value for money when making purchasing decisions.

Martyn Coffey, Marshalls’ Chief Executive said; “I’m proud that Marshalls has been awarded the Fair Tax Mark for the 5th consecutive year. It’s a Mark that demonstrates that we pay the right amount of corporation tax at the right time and in the right place, as well as overtly shunning the artificial use of tax havens and contrived tax avoidance practices.

The Fair Tax Mark creates an opportunity for us and other businesses to demonstrate a responsible approach to tax planning and celebrate the enormous contribution corporation tax makes to society and the huge array of vital public services it helps to fund.”

Issues around tax avoidance affect us all – from pushing up the supermarket prices to negatively impacting on investment in our infrastructure regionally and nationally.

It is estimated that £400bn of global corporate profits are shifted annually to tax havens, with corporate tax revenue losses in the UK of approximately £7bn per annum.

Paul Monaghan, Chief Executive, Fair Tax Mark said: “It’s great to see that Marshalls have not only secured a further year of accreditation, but now provide additional disclosures in connection with their activities outside of the UK. The fact that Marshalls say what they pay with such pride demonstrates their ongoing leadership in the area of responsible tax conduct.”

Paying fair tax is just one of the ways that we look to act as responsibly as we can. You can find out more about our work in this area, as well as our other ethical and sustainability work on our website.
