We’re thrilled to have been recognised as one of 600 European Climate Leaders in a list released by the Financial Times in partnership with Statista.

The Europe’s Climate Leaders 2024 list highlights companies that have demonstrated the greatest reduction in their Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, alongside a combination of other carbon reduction related criteria and measures. It’s been calculated over a five-year period from 2017 to 2022.

Mike Edwards, Group Head of Sustainability at Marshalls, said, “We’ve been working hard to reduce our carbon footprint for some time now, and we’re delighted to be recognised again as a Climate Leader in the Financial Times. Between 2008 and 2022, we’d already halved our Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and we continue to make great progress. However, we know we have some hard work ahead of us to continue in line with our targets.”

Mike added, “We’ve invested in renewable energy, with five sites now powered by electricity from renewable sources, and in 2022, we installed our dual block plant at our St Ives site, the first of its kind in the UK. Powered partly by renewable electricity, its new state-of-the-art curing system helps to reduce carbon impact whilst speeding up curing times.

On top of the work we’re doing at our sites to reduce our carbon footprint, we now also provide Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for most of our products, helping our customers make sustainable choices. We’re also continuing to innovate to come up with more sustainable product mixes, including reducing cement in our concrete, and in 2023, we became the first pre-cast concrete manufacturer in the UK to adopt CarbonCure Technologies, permanently locking captured carbon into concrete facing bricks at our Grove site; another big win for us.”

We’re committed to minimising our impact on the environment, and the key to this is our plan to reduce our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to Net Zero. Our commitment to sustainability is underscored by our participation in the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) - the gold standard of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets. In 2023 we recalculated our targets to take into account our recent acquisition of Marley roofing, and our new targets have been submitted to the SBTi and are awaiting validation.
