Block Stone and Quarry Stone from Marshalls

We supply premium block stone from seven UK quarries: Appleton, Locharbriggs, Fletcher Bank, Howley Park, St Bees, Stanton Moor and Doddington. Our quarries produce a wide selection of Yorkstone and sandstone suitable for architectural masonry, walling, paving and specialist stonework.

With an exceptional colour range, pinks, reds, browns, buffs and greys, our block stone is ideal for both contemporary designs and traditional building projects.

What is Block Stone?

Block stone (also known as quarry stone or dimensional block stone) is extracted in large, solid sections of natural stone before being sawn, shaped, cut or dressed. Stonemasons, architectural fabricators and conservation specialists use these blocks to create:

  • Masonry units
  • Walling stone
  • Paving and kerbs
  • Architectural components such as lintels, cills and copings
  • Bespoke carved or dressed stone

It remains one of the most versatile natural construction materials due to its strength, durability, aesthetic character, and workability.

Yorkstone and Sandstone Block Stone

Our quarries produce a mix of Yorkstone and sandstone, each offering unique geological benefits:

Yorkstone Block

Yorkstone is a hard‑wearing British sandstone known for:

  • Excellent weather resistance
  • Strong compressive strength
  • Long lifespan in urban and landscape settings
  • Distinctive tones including browns, buffs and greys

Quarries supplying Yorkstone include:

  • Fletcher Bank -  buff tones and walling material showing buff, blue and grey colouring, sometimes with grey heart
  • Howley Park - predominantly grey or buff/brown in colour
  • Stanton Moor - natural colour variation, ranging from warm yellow buff through to subtle hints of pink
  • Doddington - consistent pale pink to lilac colouring

Sandstone Block

Our sandstone quarries produce stones with:

  • Rich natural colouring
  • Excellent workability for detailed carving
  • Strength suitable for masonry and architectural features
  • Warm tones, including reds and pinks

Sandstone sources include:

  • Locharbriggs – known for strong pink/red sandstone
  • St Bees – distinctive deep red sandstone
  • Appleton – versatile sandstone for paving, architectural and masonry purposes

Together, this quarry network provides one of the widest natural colour ranges available in the UK.
