Project Brief

As part of the Carillion £75m revamp of Pier 5 at Gatwick, precast below-ground drainage products were required.

The project will increase the capacity and utilisation of the existing Pier 5 as part of Gatwick Airport’s aim to increase its passenger numbers and become London’s Airport of choice.

The project included the construction of a new departure corridor on top of the existing pier to eradicate cross flows of arriving and departing passengers.

Solution

As part of the below-ground drainage requirements, Marshalls Civils and Drainage supplied over 300 number 1800mm flexible jointed concrete pipes.

Concrete pipes are an ideal choice for durable pipeline system installations, with a design life of 120 years and proven long-term performance levels, as they actually gain strength over time rather than lose strength as other drainage materials can.

Concrete pipes do not and will not burn, corrode or deflect or reduce in hydraulic performance, or collapse under loads designed into the pipeline structure.

With its long life and use of natural and recycled products, concrete pipes are extremely environmentally friendly and a pipe’s capability to perform as expected for the design life of a scheme confirms a concrete pipeline system is a tick in the right box as far as sustainable systems.
