Creating safer spaces in the public realm

In recent years, design of public spaces has tended to prioritise environmental sustainability, with biodiversity and low carbon materials a key consideration.

Whilst this shift is welcome, has this sustainable step forward actually compromised our safety? Is enough being done to make sure people still feel safe and are safe when using public realm spaces? How can we balance the demands of biodiverse design - which often includes plentiful planting, complex habitats and tall shrubbery - with the need to create welcoming landscapes that feel open and accessible to all?

Working with the Landscape Institute and tapping into industry expertise, the creating safer spaces whitepaper will explore common themes from wayfinding, accessibility and security, to acoustics, lighting and the use of technology.
