When Marshalls design services helped Volker Fitzpatrick to redesign the sub-base of a recent permeable car park, they managed to shave over £60,000 off the total cost of the job.

When pricing for a car park at Corby’s new Logistics Centre, VFL had originally specified a competitor’s permeable block paving system using a British Standard sub-base design. However, following a meeting with one of Marshalls’ paving engineers, VFL decided to offer Marshalls the opportunity to use their product knowledge and expertise to value engineer the system.

Taking advantage of the enhanced interlock offered by Marshalls Priora blocks, Ben Birkhead(Marshalls SuDS Design Technician) proposed a shallower sub-base design which still provided sufficient structural and hydraulic performance. This rationalised design was covered by the Marshalls design warranty, which is offered in addition to the standard manufacturer’s guarantee.

In addition to the financial savings, the resulting proposal required less dig out, disposal and infill, and therefore offered significant savings in terms of material, time and carbon.

Andy Zeglovskis (Key Contractor Manager, Marshalls) agreed:

“Our designers and engineers understand exactly how our products work, and they use their knowledge and experience to value engineer projects on a bespoke basis. This a great example of how getting involved as early as possible has generated some real savings”.

"We achieved significant savings using the shallower Marshalls pavement design. There’s no doubt that this, coupled with the support we’ve had from the Marshalls team, helped us to tender a keener price and win the job"
