Smart structural design on the pavement of this prestigious development freed up funds for truly stunning natural stone surfacing.

Royal Arsenal Riverside is an ambitious and well-connected development in South East London. Right on the edge of the river, the development has breathed new life into the Woolwich area with its combination of retail, leisure and prestigious residential space.

Marshalls was approached to assist with the design of the shared courtyard space which features both a busy Tesco Metro and the development’s only pub, so footfall will be high. Berkeley wanted to use prestigious natural stone in plank sizes to create a visually impressive entrance to the development.

Tom Emerton, Marshalls Paving Engineer Manager, used a combination of data including ground conditions and anticipated loading predictions to create a bespoke sub-base design. This was shallower than the BS, providing Berkeley with considerable savings in terms of dig out, muck away, sub-base material, carbon – and, of course, money, which ensured that Berkeley’s landscape designers could afford the best natural stone paving products to complete their vision.
