Marshalls Assessor
Marc King’s story is rooted in hard work, craftsmanship, and a relentless determination to build something of his own. After leaving school, Marc went straight into work as a sheet metal worker – a job he admits he “hated”. Working in difficult conditions shaped his outlook early, but they also gave him a deep appreciation for practical trades, installers, and the realities of working on site.
At a young age Marc was cutting grass, washing cars, and doing landscape work to earn money. That entrepreneurial mindset never left him. Even while later pursuing music and attending music college in his early twenties as a talented guitar player, he continued laying patios at weekends to make ends meet. He tried to build a band, but quickly realised how difficult it was to make a sustainable career in music. Instead, he channelled his energy into what would become a lifelong side hustle – groundwork and landscaping – because, in his words, it was “always where I was meant to be”.
The financial crash of 2008 proved to be a defining moment. While many businesses struggled, Marc saw opportunity in adversity. Determined to take control of his own future, he made the bold decision to start his own business – a move he describes as one of the best decisions he ever made. The company rapidly gained momentum and by 2011, the company had truly taken off, and Marc had built a reputation through hard work, quality craftsmanship, and a genuine understanding of installers and tradespeople.
Known for “doing everything,” Marc built his company through sheer determination, often working around the clock while supporting his family. He speaks with immense pride about his daughter attending university, seeing it as one of his greatest personal achievements and a reflection of the opportunities hard work can create.
Becoming a Marshalls Assessor was a natural evolution for Marc, and although he’s downed his own tools, he remains closely connected to the realities of the trade. He believes the best way to influence installers to sell Marshalls products is by understanding their day-to-day challenges firsthand and getting the whole team behind the brand.
His passion for quality is evident and he believes that “everything you don’t see has to be spot on,” reflecting his commitment to doing the unseen work properly rather than cutting corners. Throughout his career, he became known for innovation within groundwork and drainage, jokingly referencing ideas like the “heated bench” while continually looking for ways to improve the customer experience.
Living just south of Edinburgh, Marc has built his career not through shortcuts or privilege, but through grit, resilience, and a strong belief in craftsmanship. From washing cars as a youngster to building a successful business and influencing the wider industry, his journey reflects the values of hard work, authenticity, and pride in creating something built to last.
