What is a cookie?

We use cookies on our website to distinguish you from other users. This helps us provide you with a better experience when you browse, and also allows us to make improvements to provide a better user experience.

A cookie is a small file of letters and numbers that, if you agree, is stored on your computer, or device. They’re useful as they make it easier for you to set your preferences, and enable the functionality of certain features of our website, such as the shopping cart. They can also tailor the information and advertisements you see on our website, which is fundamental to providing you with a personalised, user friendly, experience when browsing or purchasing.

In addition to our own cookies (known as first-party cookies), some cookies are set by third parties (third party cookies) which form part of wider advertising networks, or external web traffic analysis services. Full details of these known third parties can be seen in the ‘Cookie Settings’ in the cookie banner, but include AppNexus, Microsoft Bing, Casale Media, Criteo, Adobe, Facebook, LinkedIn, Infinity Tracking, Media.net, Pubmatic, Ads You Like, Nativo, Tremor Vide, and Google (including, Youtube and Google Analytics).

These are used to provide you with advertising based on your preferences on our website and others that you visit, including social media platforms, and are likely to be analytical, performance or targeting cookies.

We know that people have concerns about cookies, but we believe that the benefit we both gain from their proper use is worthwhile. You can find out more about the types of cookies we use and why we use then below.

What are the different cookies Marshalls use?

  • Strictly necessary cookies. These are cookies that are required for the operation of our website. These essential cookies are always enabled because our website won’t work properly without them. They include, for example, cookies that enable you to log into secure areas of our website and use a shopping cart. You can switch off these cookies in your browser settings but you may then not be able to access all or parts of our website.
  • Analytical or performance cookies. These allow us to recognise and count the number of visitors and to see how visitors move around our website when they are using it. This helps us to improve the way our website works, for example, by ensuring that users are finding what they are looking for easily.
  • Functionality cookies. These are used to recognise you when you return to our website. This enables us to personalise our content for you.
  • Targeting cookies. These cookies record your visit to our website, the pages you have visited and the links you have followed. We will use this information to make our website and the advertising displayed on it more relevant to you as an individual. We may also share this information with third parties for this purpose so that they can serve you with relevant advertising on their websites.

Most strictly necessary cookies only remain on your device until you close your browser, these are known as session cookies. Other cookies, known as persistent cookies, may remain for a longer period of time, for example to recall information on your next visit.

Your right to refuse cookies

When you visit our website for the first time, you will see a cookie banner explaining that we use cookies, why we use them and provide you with a link to this document. At this point, you will have the opportunity to accept all cookies or review the setting for different categories of cookies in the cookie settings. Strictly necessary cookies are always active, but you can select your preference for all other categories, by using the toggle buttons. You can also choose to “Reject All” cookies (excluding strictly necessary cookies).

In addition, you can also control cookies by activating the relevant settings on your browser or device; however, if you use your browser settings to block all cookies (including strictly necessary cookies) you may not be able to access all or parts of our website. You can also erase all cookies from your browser as often as want to.

If you have any questions or concerns about our use of cookies, please send us an email at dataprotection@marshalls.co.uk.
