The Marshalls Way is to do the right things, for the right reasons, in the right way. That’s why sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. It’s in our DNA – we’ve been on this journey for two decades. We want to create better spaces for everyone, by working with internationally recognised organisations and taking action to make a meaningful difference.

That’s why we’re moving to FSC®-certified (FSC-C133609) wood in the products we design and manufacture from now on.

What is FSC?

Marshalls Landscape Protection, a division of Marshalls Group, manufactures and supplies a large number of street furniture ranges using hardwood and softwood. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) runs a global forest certification system with two key components: Forest Management and Chain of custody.

The FSC® system allows businesses and consumers alike to easily identify wood, paper and other forest products, which have been made with materials from well-managed forests and/or recycled sources. It’s an internationally recognised mark which gives customers confidence that the products they’re buying and using are making a positive contribution not only to the environment but also to the communities that supplied the raw materials.

The FSC® promotes environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world's forests. Their vision is that the world’s forests meet the social, ecological, and economic rights and needs of future generations.

Environmentally appropriate forest management ensures that the harvest of both timber and non-timber products maintain the forest’s biodiversity productivity and ecological processes. Socially beneficial forest management helps both local people and society at large to enjoy the long term multiple benefits of these richly inhabited, air-cleaning eco-systems, and also provides strong incentives to local people to sustain the forest resources and adhere to long-term management plans.

Working with the FSC® and protecting forests from conversion to other land uses such as agriculture, introducing management practices that maintain the integrity of the forest, and restoring degraded forests, all contribute to reducing the impacts of climate change. That is why we pledge that any wood we use in the products that we design and manufacture from now on will exclusively be FSC®-certified.

“Making the move to FSC®-certified timber was an obvious step for us - we’ve been working with them for years, so now is the right time to make the arrangement permanent. We understand that sustainability is about people and communities just as much as it’s about the environment, and so does the FSC. It’s a great partnership.” Chris Griffiths, Head of Product Sustainability at Marshalls PLC

In addition, we’re undertaking a detailed review of both our existing and brought in ranges, whilst working closely with our European suppliers to replace any lumber with FSC®-certified wood wherever practicable.
