Leading hard landscaping business Marshalls plc picked up three awards at the Sustain Magazine Awards, including the International Award for Trade, the Governance Award and the highly coveted Gold Award for Sustainability, Business and the Built Environment.
The inaugural awards mark the 10th anniversary of Sustain Magazine. Held at the Novotel London West Hotel on Tuesday 3 March 2009, the awards celebrated the achievements of organisations that have shown a real and tangible commitment to sustainability.
Marshalls won the highly coveted International Prize Award for Trade for its pioneering approach to supply chain accountability, particularly with regards to its partnership approach to overseas suppliers, as well as the Governance Award for its pioneering work on carbon labelling, being the first company to label an entire product range - 503 products in its domestic range - the largest amount of products anywhere in the world.
“Winning these awards is a testament to our approach and Marshalls' commitment to sustainability”, says Chris Harrop, Marshalls' Group Marketing Director.
“Every business should make an active contribution to society as part of its key strategy, and the Sustain Magazine Awards showcased the very best. It is imperative that businesses spearhead the sustainability movement by making real and positive social change.”
The award judges were equally impressed by Marshalls' approach. For the International Award for Trade, they said: “The Judges were delighted to see a commodity producer engage so well at a global level with sensitive and complex ethical issues.”
For the Governance Award for carbon labelling, they felt that Marshalls was “so thorough and comprehensive in their approach to labelling, the company is impressively pro-active and ahead of the curve.”
Marshalls adds these accolades to a growing list of awards acknowledging the FTSE4GOOD business's core policy of social responsibility, including a Big Tick from Business in the Community and Biodiversity Benchmark status from The Wildlife Trusts as well as recently being accepted by the United Nations Global Compact.
