Marshalls Assessor
Neil Whitelock is a highly respected landscaping professional with more than 20 years’ industry experience, combining practical expertise, education, and a passion for developing the next generation of landscapers.
Neil's career began in retail, working as a bakery manager at Asda. Seeking a more rewarding and hands-on career. After a brief period in sales, Neil joined an intensive 12-month joinery programme at college, where he developed the skills and knowledge that would form the foundation of his future career.
Following his training, Neil became an assessor at Hartlepool College, a role he held for six years. During this time, he supported and mentored aspiring landscaping professionals, helping them develop practical skills and achieve industry qualifications.
After leaving the education sector, Neil established his own building and landscaping business. Starting with extensions and general building projects, he gradually expanded into landscaping as demand for his services grew. By around 2005, landscaping had become the primary focus of the business, allowing Neil to build a reputation for delivering high-quality outdoor spaces and exceptional workmanship.
Throughout his career, Neil has achieved significant industry recognition. His work has earned multiple awards, including two national awards and two regional awards through the prestigious Marshalls Accredited programme.
Nine years ago, Neil returned to education and training as a landscaping assessor. Today, he combines his extensive practical experience with a commitment to helping others succeed in the industry. He particularly enjoys demonstration days, mentoring learners, sharing best practice, and showing students how landscaping techniques are applied in real-world environments.
Neil is passionate about building relationships with learners and takes great satisfaction in seeing their confidence, skills and careers develop. While he values his current role in education, he often reflects that if his knees and back were still as strong as they once were, he would happily still be working on-site as a landscaping contractor.
His unique combination of hands-on industry experience, award-winning project delivery and dedication to skills development makes him a respected figure within the landscaping sector and an inspiring mentor for future professionals.
