We’re proud to have reached another milestone in our ongoing supply of Stanton Moor sandstone for the construction of the Basilica de la Sagrada Família in Barcelona.

Registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this is one of Europe’s most significant and complex architectural projects. Construction began in 1882, with completion expected around 2036. Our specialist block stone operations continue to play a significant role in this next phase of progress, demonstrating our strong customer relationships and quality products.

A trusted partnership

We began supplying stone to the Expiatory Temple’s Construction Board in 2018, with formal stone cutting starting in 2021. Stanton Moor buff sandstone comes in block form from our Dale View Quarry. It’s chosen for its colour consistency, carving suitability and proven durability, including resistance to frost and salt. Earlier this year we hit a milestone of supplying our 2000th tonne to this project. We also recently welcomed Àlex Masdéu, Head Mason at the Sagrada Família, to our quarries to review the range of stone available for future phases of work and a further 750 tonnes has already been marked up.

David Smith, Operations Manager at Marshalls, said:

“We’re pleased to continue supporting the Construction Board on a project of such global significance. Since our initial deliveries in 2018, we’ve been able to demonstrate the reliability of our supply and the performance of Stanton Moor sandstone. This project highlights our ability to place customer needs at the centre of our approach, combining the strength of our heritage with deep technical expertise to support complex and long-term construction programmes.”

Supporting the Glory Façade

Our stone will be used primarily on the Glory Façade, the largest and final of the basilica’s three principal façades. Its completion will mark a major milestone in the project.

Sustainability and responsible sourcing

All stone supplied from Dale View Quarry is extracted in line with our responsible sourcing commitments and environmental management standards. We continue to invest in sustainable quarrying practices across our sites to support both heritage and modern infrastructure projects.
