Marshalls has been recognised as one of Europe’s Climate Leaders by the Financial Times, compiled in partnership with Statista. This is the fifth time we’ve been included in the list, highlighting the continued progress we’re making through our Built for the Future approach to reduce emissions and support our journey towards net zero.

The list recognises European companies that have made progress in reducing their greenhouse gas emissions. The ranking considers reductions in absolute emissions and emissions intensity, alongside wider climate commitments such as Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) targets and CDP scores.

While it’s fantastic to be recognised, this achievement is really about the everyday actions happening across our sites, teams and supply chain – from the energy we use and the way we manufacture, to the products we create for our customers.

Reducing emissions across the Group

We’ve set ambitious targets to reach net-zero by 2050, with approved science-based targets providing a clear pathway for reducing our emissions across the Group.

We’re continuing to focus on the areas where we can make the biggest difference, including reducing operational emissions and improving efficiency across our sites.

  • 66% of our electricity comes from renewable sources, supported by solar arrays across five sites
  • We’re using technology such as IBM Envizi to improve how we track and manage emissions
  • We’re investing in more efficient equipment and processes to reduce energy use
  • We’re continuing to manufacture products closer to where they're needed to help reduce transport impacts

Innovating to reduce carbon in products

We’re also developing products that help our customers make lower-carbon choices.

Across our Group, our teams are continuing to invest in innovation, including:

  • Our CarbonStep® technology, used in our block paving ranges, which reduces embodied carbon by 15-20% compared with previous mix designs, while maintaining the strength, durability and appearance customers expect. The data is independently verified through our Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)
  • Carbon Cure technology, which we were the first UK precast concrete manufacturer to use in the production of our facing bricks at our Grove site. The technology injects captured carbon into the concrete, permanently storing it within the product
  • Edgemere 2.0 from Marley, the UKs first concrete roof tile offering evidence-backed carbon reduction, through the use of carbon-capture cement technology

We’re also continuing to improve transparency around the environmental impact of our products, with EPDs available across the majority of our core product ranges.

Mike Edwards, Group Head of Sustainability at Marshalls, said:

“It’s fantastic to be recognised as one of Europe’s Climate Leaders and it’s a great reflection of the progress being made across Marshalls. This achievement is down to the hard work and commitment of colleagues across the Group, who continue to play their part in reducing our impact.

“We know there is still more to do. Our science-based targets provide a clear pathway towards net zero, and we’ll continue focusing on the actions that will make the biggest difference – from reducing energy use, to improving efficiency, investing in innovation and developing lower-carbon products. We look forward to continuing this journey with our people, customers and partners.”
