Bradford’s £260m Broadway scheme was a major landmark development in the city’s regeneration. Developed by Westfield, the shopping centre was designed and specified by the developer’s design team, with the external works under the responsibility of Bradford City Council’s in-house highways engineers and landscape architects.

Thanks to previous projects, Marshalls already had a close working relationship with Bradford City Council and so we were brought into the conversation at the very early stages of the project. By involving us early, the client benefitted from our expert support with material specification and selection, and input into engineering and construction discussions too.

The materials used in the external works followed a standard palette which was predominantly natural stone paving, using a mix of Diamond Wire Sawn Scoutmoor and Appleton, which is similar to Scoutmoor. This was subsequently rolled out onto other nearby streets to blend the new development with the rest of the city. A small amount of utility paving was used on non-stone areas, the client chose Perfecta concrete paving for this.

To ensure that visitors were able to easily navigate their way around the new parts of the city, we developed a bespoke wayfinding unit using a silver grey granite, and bollards, seating and planters were supplied to ensure the whole area was welcoming and safe to all.
