PROJECT OVERVIEW

The road outside Derriford Hospital has been widened to allow buses to travel in both directions, helping to reduce congestion outside the main entrance and making bus journeys to and from the hospital quicker and more reliable.

The scheme provides better waiting areas for bus and taxi passengers and those getting dropped off or collected by car.  Four additional bus stops have been installed with footpaths widened to provide more space for waiting passengers.

The project is part of the master plan of highway improvements on and around the city’s ‘northern corridor’, connecting with the new Marion Link Road and complementing other schemes, such as the Derriford Transport Scheme.

SOLUTION

A cost-effective lifetime cost was the key aspect of the project, along with a robust system, which would never need to be replaced as there was a high level of trafficking within the area; Derriford hospital is Plymouth’s second business bus interchange and the constant bus overrun meant a high loading drainage solution was crucial.

Pave Drain was chosen as it provided a cost-effective solution that was robust enough to withstand the frequent heavy vehicle overrun, including the heavy trafficking.

Pave Drain will not need to be replaced, ensuring project lifecycle costs are kept low.

By using a coordinating Pave Drain top unit, the drainage can blend seamlessly with the surrounding paving, with no need to break up the overall aesthetic with a traditional grated solution, while retaining an excellence inlet and loading capacity.

Amey utilised our complimentary design service for the drainage packaging of the scheme, which ensured a fast turnaround, which was important, as the scheme was delayed by three to four months before construction works could proceed.  This affected travel in the surrounding area, and user experience to the hospital, so speed of installation was essential to achieve the project timelines, as well as patients and visitors to the hospital.
