Clare

National Operations Manager

Why did you join Marshalls?

I joined Marshalls in 2018, having worked in various sectors such as energy, travel, and nursery products. I was attracted to Marshalls as it is such a well-known brand, steeped in history and although I had no previous experience in the construction industry, I was keen to broaden my knowledge. Marshalls offer a variety of products and as such several different businesses operate under the Marshalls umbrella, I began my career within the Mortars and Screeds business as a Customer Service Manager.

Marshalls has a real down to earth quality that I immediately connected with. Working with colleagues across the businesses always highlights the great working relationships, commitment to continuous improvement and how collaboration can help us all achieve the results we need. Having worked in many different businesses, I can say that at Marshalls we have some of the best people I have ever met, we work together as a team. As a female in an industry that statistically is majority male, the inclusivity demonstrated by colleagues, at all levels, is fantastic.

What keeps you at Marshalls?

Marshalls invest in their employees, and I have had various development opportunities which have significantly impacted my career progression. I have successfully completed a Level 5 apprenticeship in Operational Management which in turn enabled me to move into an operational role within Mortars and Screeds. I feel extremely fortunate that not only have Marshalls provided me with the opportunity to study towards a nationally recognised qualification, but they’ve also shown faith in me and my development by supporting my move into an operational role.

Without studying towards the Level 5 apprenticeship, I may not have had the confidence or insight into the role to enable my career growth. I am currently studying towards a Level 7 in Executive Business Management with Cranfield University, which is again another fantastic learning experience and illustrates the development opportunities within Marshalls.

What does a day in your life at Marshalls look like? How do you make time for career and personal development?

As National Operations Manager, health and safety of our people is paramount. I work closely with all functions to ensure we can maintain high quality service whilst also producing quality product, and am continuously looking to invest in our sites and our people. I’m also a mum of two; Marshalls has given me the flexibility to progress within my career and have respected my commitments as a parent - I feel that the all-important work life balance that so many working parents have to navigate is supported.

I enjoy mentoring colleagues and am proud to be a member of the Women’s Network which allows female colleagues to connect and at Marshalls, they champion working towards inclusivity across the businesses. I enjoy driving change and improvements, this is at the heart of everything I do. Enabling my team to grow and creating autonomy makes us stronger – I am so proud of the team at Mortars and Screeds. It’s them that brings me to work each day and encourages me to always strive for more, to become the best working environment possible.
