Golden success for Marshalls at Holker Garden Festival
Marshalls ‘Family Garden’ in support of UNICEF was awarded Large Gold at this year’s prestigious Holker Garden Festival.
Two Cumbria-based Marshalls Register Members also enjoyed success. Sharp Paving won ‘Best in Show’ for its garden ‘Water under the Bridge’ featuring the stunning new Casarta Slate paving and N W Paving and Landscaping won a Large Gold for its garden ‘Circular shades of grey’ which featured a range of Marshalls products.
Hosted by Lord and Lady Cavendish, the show which celebrated its 22nd year proved popular, with thousands of visitors welcomed from 30th May – 1st June and a special guest appearance by horticulturist and BBC The One Show’s resident gardening expert Christine Walkden.
The Family Garden was the first Marshalls designed and built garden and celebrated the work being undertaken by Marshalls and UNICEF to tackle child labour in India’s quarrying sector and to support children in Vietnam and China.
Created for families to enjoy together, the garden attracted children and adults alike, many taking the opportunity to play traditional hopscotch on the brightly coloured PlayPave, whilst surrounded by edible plants and herbs and pathways in products which provided sensory interest and different textures.
Many visitors were fascinated by the ‘Flower Girl’ sculpture which sat at the centre of the Family Garden. This original Disley sculpture made from Indian sandstone reflected Marshalls support for vulnerable children around the world.
Child labour continues to be an important issue. India is one of the world’s largest raw stone producers, accounting for more than 11 per cent of the world’s total exports and more than 27 per cent of stone mined worldwide. UNICEF estimates that approximately one in five of India’s mineworkers are children - that is an estimated 13 million children aged 5-14 years.
As part of a new three year partnership with UNICEF, Marshalls has pledged to donate £1 to UNICEF from the sale of every square metre (1m²) of its ethically sourced “Fairstone” paving range.
To further support the partnership Marshalls has opened an auction to sell the Flower Girl statue to raise vital funds for UNICEF.
The auction is now live on eBay and will end at 8pm on 10th June. The successful bidder will also receive a framed picture of Disley’s original drawings and a signed book about his work.
